According to CDC, supplies are exhausted and surgical masks are in urgent need. As sewists, we can do our part to help those working on the frontlines by creating masks for them as well as for our loved ones. A recent study bas shown that fabrics with tightly woven threads are the best option when making masks at home, and batiks are perfect due to their higher than average thread count. So rummage through your batik stash or support a local quilt shop by calling them up to place an order. Click HERE to read more about this study.
Design Director Karen Gibbs and a few others created these fabric masks using tightly woven Banyan Batiks and elastic pieces. While these do not have the same protective capability as an N95 mask, the CDC does encourage them to be worn if you find yourself outside for any essential purpose. Of course the best way to keep safe and avoid the spread of COVID-19 is to stay inside, avoid groups of people and regularly wash hands and surfaces.
