Chenille scarves are the perfect accesory for this cold season! Not only do they look adorable, they are also absolutely soft and warm, especially when made with our Rayon fabrics. To make these soft scarves, here is what you need:
- 1 yard and three quarters of Rayon fabric
- An Olfa Rotary Cutter
- An Olfa Chenille Cutter
- Pins
- Tailor's chalk
- A straight edge ruler
Step 1: First cut the fabrics on the bias into seven strips, where one is 6" in width and the rest are 5¼" in width. The widest strip is the 'base' or center section of the scarf. Lay out three 5¼" pieces on both sides of the widest piece along one long edge, and line up the raw edges of all strips, leaving approximately ¾" from the end of the 'base'.
Pin the pieces down to flip the base over without shifting from along the edge. Repeat the above layering sequence on the other side and carefully place pins to incorporate all seven pieces, removing the pins from the other side so as not to run over them while sewing.
Step 2: Find the center of the 5¼" pieces and with tailor's chalk, draw a center line down the length of the scarf to the end of the shorter pieces and stitch.
Once completed, remove the pins from both sides of the narrower pieces. Working from both sides of the center, sew 3/8" from the last stitch line, backstitching at the end of the shorter pieces. This should give approximately six rows of stitching on each side of the center. Once done, take your Olfa Chenille Cutter and slice along the center between each row of stitches on both sides, taking extra caution to only cut through three layers of fabric. Trim approximately ¼" from last stitch line.
Step 3: The next step would be to create a fringe. While this is optional, it sure creates a pretty look for the scarf. Simply cut between the chenilled rows approximately 2-3 inches or however long you wish the fringe to be.
Once this is done, wash and dry the scarf to create its unique fluffiness. This leaves you with a beautiful scarf that you can dress your outfit up with and keep yourself cozy!
