Julie Herman of Jaybird Quilts is a bestselling author, speaker, quilt pattern and ruler designer. She is known for her quilting rulers, the Hex N More and Sidekick rulers, that are used to make her quilt designs, such as Night Sky, Northern Lights, Rock Candy, Gravity Nebula and others. Julie is recognized in the quilting community for bringing simplified design and clarity to geometrically inspired patterns.
'Jaybird' was a childhood nickname given to Julie by her brother. She was a very crafty kid who worked with clay, embroidery, beads, photography, oil and acrylic painting, and more. When she was in college, she borrowed her mother's sewing machine to learn something new, and never returned it. Julie started Jaybird Quilts as a blog in 2009 to share her quilts and have a journal of her progress.
Julie's superpower is geometry and design. She is energized by the beauty of math in modernizing traditional quilt designs. She designed her first patterns on her home computer and worked part time in a local quilt shop to learn more about what customers like and what it takes to keep a shop going.
Julie is a girl on a mission to make life better with fabric. Jaybird Quilts is a one woman operation fueled with lots of help and support from close friends and family. She loves doing what she does because she is one of those people who has a passion for saying things like "Look what I made.
Since starting her blog, Julie has been published in many magazines. She has written some Block of the Month books: Nebula, Sweet Tooth, Gravity, Park Bench and Toes in the Sand.
She also wrote Skip the Borders and contributed to Fun-Size Quilts & Rock Solid, all published by Martingale.
