Dr. Reeze L. Hanson is now retired after more than 35 years as a Professor of Speech, Theatre, and Communication Studies. In addition to being an award-winning teacher, Reeze has been a custom dressmaker, a professional costume designer in the educational and off-Broadway theatre, and a seamstress specializing in bridal and formalwear. She has been a quilter since 1997 and has taught numerous quilt classes, workshops, retreat classes, and shop classes in a wide variety of project and skill classes. She is a skillful quilter, pattern designer, and lecturer with her own pattern company, Morning Glory Designs, started in 2007. She has more than 50 quilt and block of the month patterns on the market and many more in development. Her patterns have appeared in the pages of Quilter’s World, McCall’s Quilting, For the Love of Quilting, Quick Quilts, The Quilt Pattern Magazine, and have been featured in several books including Jumpstart Your Quilting and Golden’s Journal.
Reeze’s design style was inspired by her busy life, and the desire to make complex-looking pieced and applique quilts using simple and fast techniques geared toward working women and beginners. “If I didn’t speed up the process somehow I would never get anything done! There are just too many designs running around in my head and too little time to get them all completed. I want to share them with other busy quilters so they can enjoy beautiful quilts even as they are developing their skills.” In addition, teaching beginning quilt classes revealed the need for pattern instructions that are clear, detailed and illustrated so that a quilter of any skill level could follow them successfully. Finally, Reeze’s quilting style draws on traditional blocks and settings with a twist to make them fresh and modern, as well as an infusion of strong colors drawn from her years as a theatrical designer.
Reeze lectures on EQ7, Color Confidence for Quilters, Sources of Quilt Inspiration, Communication for Quilters, Odd Blocks and Settings that Rock, and Grandmother’s Flower Garden Quilts (The Hexagon and Beyond), and the One Patch Renaissance. Workshops include teaching any of her Charming Botanicals table runner patterns (one-patch quilt techniques and machine applique), EQ7 classes for beginners to advanced; tote bags in three different patterns and styles; Seminole pieced sampler or tote bag; pieced hexagon quilts (Merry Go Round Quilt); Color Confidence Workshop, 60° diamonds and triangles, curved piecing without pins, and other project & technique classes.
Reeze is an entertaining and knowledgeable speaker, and a gifted designer and teacher.
